She was born on September 14, 1939, to the late Luther Johnson and Ada Sims Ibay.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years Jerry D. Moreland Sr. She was a member of Madisonville Baptist Church, Madisonville, Tennessee.

Deceased siblings are sister Viva Johnson Sims and brothers Kelly Johnson and Osborn Lewis Johnson, half-brother William Luther Johnson Jr.

She is survived by her children, Edwin Moreland (Sharon) of Rockford, Illinois, Debbie Cox of Chattanooga, TN, and Jerry Moreland Jr., (Cyndi) of Pleasant View, TN, also 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Brother L.B. Johnson of Dunlap, TN, sister Robbie Dean Sheffield of Arroyo Grande, CA, and half-sister Kathie Johnson Grissom of Tullahoma, TN.

She enjoyed traveling with her spouse Jerry in their RV to many different areas and staying in campgrounds and meeting new people.

A Celebration of Life will be announced and held later.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in her honor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 3pm in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Brother Randy Riggs officiating.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 1pm until the hour of service at 3pm.

Mr. Redmon was born May 5, 1985 in Ann Arbor, MI to William Thomas Redmon of MA, and Robyn Redmon-Fleming and her husband, Mark Fleming, of Springfield. He worked as a printing press operator.

Mr. Redmon is preceded in death by his grandparents, John Edward Madden and Shirlee Mae Madden.

Ray was born April 25, 1960 in Springfield to the late Robert Marvin and Nellie Winters Lambert. He was a graduate of East Robertson High School. He loved his family and his dogs. He enjoyed watching wrestling on television, motorcycles, and Hot Rod Cars. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Gabriel Lambert.

Obituary for Joseph W. Jones

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 8, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (23)Joseph W. Jones, a cherished member of the Greenbrier, TN community, passed away on June 5, 2024, at the age of 93. He was born on February 21, 1931, in Robertson County to the late George and Hattie Jones.

Joseph was a dedicated worker, having spent many years in the construction and maintenance field. He lent his skills and expertise to DWC Inc. and Rogers Group, where he made lasting contributions to the projects he worked on.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Joseph found joy and fulfillment in his personal life. He was married to the love of his life, Shirley Jones, who predeceased him. Together, they shared countless cherished memories and built a life filled with love and devotion.

Joseph was preceded in death by his siblings, George Arnold Jones, J. B. Jones, Calvin Jones, Ray Jones, Annie Lou Jones, and Roma Jones. Though they may have left this world before him, their memories will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

Joseph is survived by his son, Ricky Jones, his nephew, Charles King and grandchildren, Brandy Lamell, Jennifer Jones and Ricky Jr.

Alex leaves behind a special sense of humor enabling him to laugh at himself. He was a kind person who didn’t hesitate to tell you he loved you. He will be greatly missed.

Alex is reunited in eternity with his maternal grandmother, Jean Hardy, and paternal grandfather, James Jett.

James Owen Fuqua Jr., known to many as “Jim,” passed away unexpectedly on May 31, 2024, in his hometown of Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Born on November 20, 1956, in Madison, Tennessee, Jim led a life filled with dedication and service to his community and country.

Jim’s career was marked by a profound commitment to upholding justice and protecting others. He commenced his journey in law enforcement as a police officer with the Goodlettsville Police Department, where he honed his skills and unwavering duty. Transitioning to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Jim served as a devoted homicide detective before concluding his career as an officer at the federal courthouse downtown.

A graduate of Goodlettsville High School’s class of 1974, he furthered his education by studying criminology at Austin Peay State University.

A man beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, Jim was held in high regard throughout the community for his kindness and willingness to help those in need. His warm personality and strong moral compass left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.

In addition to his distinguished career and educational pursuits, Jim also proudly served his country in the United States Army. His military service exemplified his selflessness and dedication to a greater cause.

During his leisure time, Jim found joy in various hobbies and interests. He was an avid supporter of University of Tennessee athletics and the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team. He also cherished the music of Jimmy Buffett and was a proud ‘Parrothead’. However, it was while fishing that Jim found solace and relaxation amidst life’s demands.

Jim was an unwavering Christian and a member of Goodlettsville Church.

Jim leaves behind a legacy cherished by many. He is survived by his devoted girlfriend Linda Cantrell and her son, Jason; loving sister Linda (John) Raska; aunt Betty Parker; uncle John Bentle; and a host of cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father James Owen Fuqua, Sr.; mother Jessie Frances Bentle Fuqua; brothers Lyn Royce Fuqua and Thomas Lee Fuqua; his girlfriend’s daughter, Dana Cantrell.

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 8, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (38)Ernest Donald “Don” Harp, 83, of Montezuma, GA, formerly of Springfield, TN, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 17th at 2:00 p.m. in the Springfield Memorial Gardens with Tim Harris officiating. There will be no public visitation prior to the graveside service.

An original Southtown Rinky Dink, Don was a man of many talents. He penned several books, poems, and short stories, painting pictures with his words and stirring emotions in his readers. He was also a published songwriter, adding melody and meaning to many lives. Spending countless years in Nashville, TN, within the Country Music Entertainment Industry, Don’s contributions were invaluable, shaping the industry he held dear.

Don, a proud member of the US Air Force during the Vietnam War, lived a life as colorful as the stories he wrote and the songs he sang.

Don’s life was a testament to the power of following one’s passions and sharing one’s gifts with the world. His creative spirit, warm heart, and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The list of accolades could go on for days, but perhaps the most cherished were the moments spent with his loving family.

Don is survived by his children: Shelly (Steve) of Ideal, GA; Jason Harp of Springfield, TN; Nikki Harp of Montezuma, GA; and Derek Harp of Ellijay, GA. He was a devoted grandfather to Brandon (Jenny), Megan (Stephen), Joshua, Anthony, Jacob (Emily), Braxten Paige (whom Don raised just as he raised his own children), Olivia, and Darien, and cherished great-grandfather to several.

In addition to his immediate family, Don leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives, along with a multitude of wonderful friends, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Obituary for Linda Carol Bowers

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 8, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (43)Linda Carol Bowers passed into Heaven on June 2, 2024 at the age of 66. She regrets only that her abrupt departure did not afford her one last good smoke of a high-quality cigarette, and the opportunity to share that moment with her eldest son, whom she had convinced to choke one down with her for her last hurrah. Her family is certain that this was the first of many strong opinions that she took up with her Creator, who she revered, but for whom she had questions.
Carol was born on July 30, 1957 in Russellville, Kentucky to Truby and Linda Lee. She was a graduate of Russellville High School class of ‘75 and later served as the matriarch of an active-duty, military family during the height of the Gulf War. In her most recent years, Carol enjoyed a simple life with friends and family, a full glass of sweet tea, a fresh moon pie, and a good murder mystery.

She was preceded in death by her parents Truby and Linda Lee, and her beloved brother, Michael Lee. She is survived by her two loving sons, Jonathan Bowers (Sara) of White House, and Matthew Bowers of Portland; her grandchildren Lucy Bowers and Evan Leftwich; her sister, Kim Rust (Frank) of Auburn, KY and her brother Kelly Lee of Lewisburg, KY; her ex-spouse and forever friend, Bobby Bowers of Springfield; her chosen family, Pat Bowers of Portland and Willie Bettner of Madison, and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
Carol chose to be cremated and expressed her desire to have no formal service. Celebration of life for Carol Bowers will be at White House First United Methodist Church, 3403 US-31W, White House, TN on Friday, June 14th. Visitation for loved ones from 5-7 pm with prayer and remembrance service following. at 7pm.

Funeral services were conducted Friday May 31st at 1:00 p.m. at the 431 Church at 4776 Hwy 431 North in Springfield with Pastor Tony Stratton officiating. Interment followed in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Alan Crawford, Austin Crawford, Johnny Anderson, Jesse Hutchinson, Tyler Tucker, A.J. Crawford, Sam Crawford, and Caden Crawford serving as pallbearers. The family received friends on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the 431 Church.

Mrs. Crawford was born August 9, 1940, in Greenbrier, to the late Maydell and Marybell Costellow. She was a homemaker and a member of 431 Church in Springfield. She loved to crochet, listen to gospel music, find good deals at Goodwill and yard sales. Her favorite things in life were cheesecake, Zero candy bars, peach water, and diet Dr. Pepper. Mrs. Crawford loved her Lord, her church, and her family, especially each of her grand, great grand, and great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Linthacum was born on September 29, 1935 in Cheatham County, Tennessee to the late Robert & Ethel Reeves Newland. She was retired after 20 years as a factory worker. Dell lived most of her life near Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Tennessee. She was a kind and giving person. Dell loved to garden whenever she could and attended Faith Community Church of the Nazarene in Ashland City.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Mable, Bertha, Ellie, Maxine, Uldean, and Mary; brothers, James, Joe, Delmous, Tex, Herman, and Bruce.

Born January 17, 1938 to Erasmus P. and Frances Wilson McKee, Wilson loved God, his family, his country and community. He was a member of South Haven Baptist Church and previous member of Orlinda Baptist Church and Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School for over 45 years. Wilson loved his community and found many ways to serve such as Scout Master of Cross Plains Troop 453 for many years. He also enjoyed delivering meals and visiting nursing homes. He was a proud veteran of the Army and member of The Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He worked to start and build his own successful business, Perfection Moulders, Inc. Wilson loved history, particularly Civil War history, researching the Bible, Southern Gospel music and attending gospel singings. His family say that he loved to talk to people and tell “corny” jokes.

McKee, Jr.; daughter, Lori McKee Baldwin, 3 grandsons, Jesse Nathaniel, Ezekiel Ray and Ian Peyton McKee; 2 granddaughters, Rachel Lee and Adah Kathleen Baldwin; 3 great grandchildren, Ella, Erasmus and Jude McKee; and 2 brothers, Richard Stein and Robert McKee.

Visitation with the family will be 3 – 6 pm on Friday, June 7, 2024 at the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield, Tennessee. Funeral services will be 2 pm Saturday, June 8, 2024 at South Haven Baptist Church with visitation from Noon until the time of service at South Haven Baptist Church. Pastor Frank Gagliono and Ronnie Cope will officiate. Burial will follow at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery in Cross Plains, Tennessee with Jesse McKee, Ezekiel McKee, Peyton McKee, Johnny Norton, Gene Oakley, and Ronnie Cope serving as pallbearers.

Obituary for Irene Palmer

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 8, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (63)Irene Johnson Palmer, age 94, of Springfield, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2024 at her home.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, 2024 at 11am in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Sam Andavazo officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Memorial Gardens with Major Yates, Jeff Wilson, Bubba Watson, Tomas Garcia, Billy Jackson, Stan Johnson, Tim Johnson, Pat Tobin, Edward Miller Williams, Terry Johnson and John Palmer serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, June 2, 2024 from 2-4pm and again on Monday from 9am until the hour of service at 11am.

Mrs. Palmer was born December 14, 1929 in Barren Plains to the late Albert and Floy Gainous Johnson. A twin to her sister, Lorene, the “golden dust twins” were delivered by their aunt Blanch, weighing only 5 pounds each and their father called them “his babies” as long as he lived. Along with her sister, Lorene, Irene enjoyed playing basketball and cheerleading at Barren Plains School and at Springfield High School before graduating. She retired from South Central Bell after 35 years of service and was a member of Springfield Baptist Church for over 50 years.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Palmer is preceded in death by her husband, Franklin “Buster” Palmer and her siblings, Mable Heatherly, Delphia Williams, W.A. Johnson, Ammon Johnson, and their beloved dog “Muffin”.

Mrs. Palmer is also survived by a host of loving great-nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Mr. Cox was born October 6, 1947 in Robertson County, to the late Albert Taylor Cox and Rosie Hart Cox. He was a God-fearing man, one of God’s faithful servants. Larry loved his family deeply, was a hard worker, selfless and loyal, and highly respected in the community. Mr. Cox had been a member of Center Point Baptist Church for 67 years.

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 8, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (73)John Wayne Groves, age 72 of Cottontown passed away Monday, May 27, 2024 at Skyline Medical Center. He was born November 3, 1951 in Franklin, KY to John Harrold & Wylo Dene Harrison Groves . He worked as a machinist for Nashville Wire and then retired in 2008 from J’Dak. In the 1970’s, he worked as a machinist for Richard Petty. He enjoyed farming most of his life and was a member of Cherry Mound Masonic Lodge #227. and Mount Pleasant General Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren more than anything else in the world.

He is preceded in death by his father; wife, Nancy Carol Groves. He is survived by his son, Jamie Groves, Cottontown, TN; mother, Wylo Dene Groves, Portland, TN; sister, Martha (Steve) Warren, Clemmons, NC; 4 grandchildren, Kyle, Alex, Eros and Liam.

Interment followed in Cross Plains Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation was Friday, May 31, 2024 10am until the hour of the service at the funeral home. A Masonic service was held Friday at 1pm in the chapel prior to the funeral service.
